Writing guide

Introduce

Address them as “Dear MP not found”, or “Dear MP not found”

Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith.

Congratulate them on winning the election and welcome them as your new MP.

Ask

Ask them if they support the commitments made by the Government and the Opposition to protect religious freedom.

You may choose to mention one or all of these commitments:

  • That “religious freedom will not go backwards”, as the PM promised.
  • Progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders.
  • Protecting the right of faith-based organisations – including schools – to employ staff based on faith.

(You can read more about the commitments here)

Conclude

Assure them you are praying for them as they serve the community (make sure you do pray!)

Include your name and address, so they know you are a member of their electorate.

Example letter

This letter is provided as an example. It is always best to write your own letter, however this example is based on a few of the discussion points above and is provided to help you start.

If you are basing your letter off this template, make sure you replace the sections in **{brackets}**

Dear ,

****{Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith}****

I am writing to express my concern about the urgent need to protect religious freedom in our country. Both Labor and the Coalition made promises during the election to address this important issue, including progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders and ensuring that faith-based organisations have the right to employ staff according to their faith.

As a newly elected independent member of Parliament, your role is crucial in shaping the future of these commitments. I am keen to know if you will support these promises made by both major parties and take active steps to safeguard religious freedom. The ability for faith-based schools and organisations to uphold their values through staffing decisions is essential for the preservation of their unique missions and identities.

Your leadership in this matter could have a profound impact on many communities. Please know that I am praying for you as you navigate this important role. I hope you will consider the importance of this issue and support measures that protect the religious freedoms of all Australians.
