Writing guide

Introduce

Address them as “Dear MP not found”, or “Dear MP not found”

Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith.

Congratulate them on winning the election and welcome them as your new MP.

Ask

Ask them if they support the commitments made by the Government and the Opposition to protect religious freedom.

You may choose to mention one or all of these commitments:

  • That “religious freedom will not go backwards”, as the PM promised.
  • Progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders.
  • Protecting the right of faith-based organisations – including schools – to employ staff based on faith.

(You can read more about the commitments here)

Conclude

Assure them you are praying for them as they serve the community (make sure you do pray!)

Include your name and address, so they know you are a member of their electorate.

Example letter

This letter is provided as an example. It is always best to write your own letter, however this example is based on a few of the discussion points above and is provided to help you start.

If you are basing your letter off this template, make sure you replace the sections in **{brackets}**

Dear ,

****{Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith}****

I am writing to you to express the importance of protecting religious freedom, an issue that both Labor and the Coalition have highlighted during their campaigns. They have committed to progressing a religious discrimination bill and ensuring that faith-based organisations, like schools, can employ staff aligned with their religious beliefs. The Prime Minister has assured that "religious freedom will not go backwards," a promise that holds significant value. As a newly elected independent member of Parliament, your support for these commitments is crucial in upholding the principles of religious freedom. Your stance could greatly influence the progression of laws that safeguard these freedoms. As you begin your journey representing our community, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. The work you do is vital, and I trust that you will stand firm in supporting measures that are beneficial to our diverse society and protect the rights of all individuals to express their faith.

****{enter your name and address.}****
