Writing guide

Introduce

Address them as “Dear MP not found”, or “Dear MP not found”

Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith.

Congratulate them on winning the election and welcome them as your new MP.

Ask

Ask them if they support the commitments made by the Government and the Opposition to protect religious freedom.

You may choose to mention one or all of these commitments:

  • That “religious freedom will not go backwards”, as the PM promised.
  • Progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders.
  • Protecting the right of faith-based organisations – including schools – to employ staff based on faith.

(You can read more about the commitments here)

Conclude

Assure them you are praying for them as they serve the community (make sure you do pray!)

Include your name and address, so they know you are a member of their electorate.

Example letter

This letter is provided as an example. It is always best to write your own letter, however this example is based on a few of the discussion points above and is provided to help you start.

If you are basing your letter off this template, make sure you replace the sections in **{brackets}**

Dear ,

****{Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith}****

Congratulations on your recent election victory. As you step into this important role as a new Member of Parliament, I would like to express my keen interest in the commitments made by both the Government and the Opposition regarding the protection of religious freedom.

It is vital to progress a religious discrimination bill with input from faith leaders. Such a measure would ensure that people of all faiths can practise their beliefs free from discrimination. It is also crucial to protect the right of faith-based organisations, including schools, to employ staff who share their religious values. This is essential for maintaining the integrity and mission of these institutions.

As you navigate the responsibilities and challenges of your new role, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you approach this opportunity with discernment and dedication to serving our community and upholding the values we cherish.
