Writing guide

Introduce

Address them as “Dear MP not found”, or “Dear MP not found”

Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith.

Congratulate them on winning the election and retaining their seat.

Ask

Ask them if they support the commitments made by the Government and the Opposition to protect religious freedom.

You may choose to mention one or all of these commitments:

  • That “religious freedom will not go backwards”, as the PM promised.
  • Progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders.
  • Protecting the right of faith-based organisations – including schools – to employ staff based on faith.

(You can read more about the commitments here)

Conclude

Assure them you are praying for them as they serve the community (make sure you do pray!)

Include your name and address, so they know you are a member of their electorate.

Example letter

This letter is provided as an example. It is always best to write your own letter, however this example is based on a few of the discussion points above and is provided to help you start.

If you are basing your letter off this template, make sure you replace the sections in **{brackets}**

Dear ,
or Dear ,

****{Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith}****

I am writing to express my concern regarding the protection of religious freedom, an issue highlighted by promises from both Labor and the Coalition during the recent election. Both parties committed to progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders and to protecting the rights of faith-based organisations—such as schools—to employ staff based on faith. The Prime Minister has assured us that "religious freedom will not go backwards," a promise of great importance to many Australians who value their ability to practise their faith openly and authentically.

As an independent member of Parliament, your support is crucial in ensuring that these commitments are honoured. I urge you to advocate for robust protections for religious freedom, which would safeguard the rights of individuals and organisations to live according to their beliefs. I am praying for you as you take on this significant role and trust that your efforts will contribute positively to the legislative landscape. Your influence can help ensure that religious freedoms are not only preserved but strengthened in our diverse society.
