Writing guide

Introduce

Address them as “Dear MP not found”, or “Dear MP not found”

Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith.

Congratulate them on winning the election and retaining their seat.

Thank

Thank them for the commitments that Labor and the Prime Minister have made to protect religious freedom.

You may choose to mention one or all of these commitments:

  • The Prime Minister committed that “religious freedom will not go backwards”
  • Labor will progress a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders.
  • Any legislation impacting religious freedom will be bipartisan with the Coalition and not a deal with the Greens.

(You can read more about the commitments here)

Conclude

Tell them you are looking forward to seeing the Government keep these promises.

Assure them you are praying for them as they serve the community (make sure you do pray!)

Include your name and address, so they know you are a member of their electorate.

Example letter

This letter is provided as an example. It is always best to write your own letter, however this example is based on a few of the discussion points above and is provided to help you start.

If you are basing your letter off this template, make sure you replace the sections in **{brackets}**

Dear ,

****{Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith}****

Congratulations on your recent election victory. Your commitment to protecting religious freedom is greatly appreciated, as is Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's assurance that "religious freedom will not go backwards.” These statements provide hope and reassurance to many Australians who value their right to practice their faith without fear of discrimination.

The intention to progress a religious discrimination bill with broad support rather than aligning solely with any one party demonstrates a commendable focus on bipartisan cooperation. This approach is vital for legislation that affects such a fundamental aspect of society, ensuring it is inclusive and widely accepted.

As you embark on your journey serving our community, I look forward to seeing the Government fulfil these promises. It is my hope that the dialogue around this issue remains open and respectful. Please know that I am praying for you as you take on the responsibilities of leadership and work to uphold the values we hold dear. Your efforts in this area will be closely followed by those who hold religious freedom as a core tenet of their lives.
