Writing guide

Introduce

Address them as “Dear MP not found”, or “Dear MP not found”

Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith.

Congratulate them on winning the election and retaining their seat.

Ask

Ask them if they support the commitments made by the Government and the Opposition to protect religious freedom.

You may choose to mention one or all of these commitments:

  • That “religious freedom will not go backwards”, as the PM promised.
  • Progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders.
  • Protecting the right of faith-based organisations – including schools – to employ staff based on faith.

(You can read more about the commitments here)

Conclude

Assure them you are praying for them as they serve the community (make sure you do pray!)

Include your name and address, so they know you are a member of their electorate.

Example letter

This letter is provided as an example. It is always best to write your own letter, however this example is based on a few of the discussion points above and is provided to help you start.

If you are basing your letter off this template, make sure you replace the sections in **{brackets}**

Dear ,

****{Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith}****

I am writing to express my concerns and hopes regarding the commitments made by both Labor and the Coalition to protect religious freedom in Australia. These promises include progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders and safeguarding the right of faith-based organisations, including schools, to employ staff according to their religious beliefs.

With the Prime Minister emphasising that "religious freedom will not go backwards," it is crucial that these commitments are upheld in the coming term. As an independent member of Parliament who has just been reelected, you hold a pivotal role in ensuring these promises are realised.

Your support for measures that protect religious freedoms would be greatly valued. Many in the community rely on these protections to practice their faith openly and without fear of discrimination. I am particularly interested in how you plan to engage with these issues during your term.

Please know that I am praying for you as you undertake your important role in Parliament. Your leadership and decisions have significant impacts, and I trust you will approach these challenges with wisdom and strength.
