Writing guide

Introduce

Address them as “Dear MP not found”, or “Dear MP not found”

Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith.

Congratulate them on winning the election and retaining their seat.

Ask

Ask them if they support the commitments made by the Government and the Opposition to protect religious freedom.

You may choose to mention one or all of these commitments:

  • That “religious freedom will not go backwards”, as the PM promised.
  • Progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders.
  • Protecting the right of faith-based organisations – including schools – to employ staff based on faith.

(You can read more about the commitments here)

Conclude

Assure them you are praying for them as they serve the community (make sure you do pray!)

Include your name and address, so they know you are a member of their electorate.

Example letter

This letter is provided as an example. It is always best to write your own letter, however this example is based on a few of the discussion points above and is provided to help you start.

If you are basing your letter off this template, make sure you replace the sections in **{brackets}**

Dear ,

****{Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith}****

Congratulations on your recent election victory and for retaining your seat in Parliament. Your continued service is appreciated, and I trust you will represent our community with dedication and integrity.

I am writing to inquire about your stance regarding the commitments made by both the Government and the Opposition to protect religious freedom. During the campaign, the Prime Minister assured us that "religious freedom will not go backwards," a promise that many in our community are counting on. Efforts to progress a religious discrimination bill, in collaboration with faith leaders, have been mentioned as a step towards safeguarding these freedoms.

Another critical issue is the protection of the right for faith-based organisations, including schools, to employ staff based on their faith. This right is essential for these organisations to maintain their religious mission and values. I would appreciate your perspective on these commitments and your plans to support them in Parliament.

Please know that as you undertake your duties, I am keeping you in my prayers, hoping that your actions will benefit both our community and the nation.
