Writing guide

Introduce

Address them as “Dear MP not found”, or “Dear MP not found”

Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith.

Congratulate them on winning the election and retaining their seat.

Ask

Ask them if they support the commitments made by the Government and the Opposition to protect religious freedom.

You may choose to mention one or all of these commitments:

  • That “religious freedom will not go backwards”, as the PM promised.
  • Progressing a religious discrimination bill in collaboration with faith leaders.
  • Protecting the right of faith-based organisations – including schools – to employ staff based on faith.

(You can read more about the commitments here)

Conclude

Assure them you are praying for them as they serve the community (make sure you do pray!)

Include your name and address, so they know you are a member of their electorate.

Example letter

This letter is provided as an example. It is always best to write your own letter, however this example is based on a few of the discussion points above and is provided to help you start.

If you are basing your letter off this template, make sure you replace the sections in **{brackets}**

Dear ,
or Dear ,

****{Introduce yourself and say something about your family, community, or your faith}****

Congratulations on winning the election and retaining your seat. Your commitment and dedication have clearly resonated with the community, and your continued representation is valued.

As a concerned constituent, I am writing to inquire about your stance on the commitments made by both the Government and the Opposition to protect religious freedom. The Prime Minister's promise that "religious freedom will not go backwards" is a significant assurance for many in our community. It would be helpful to know if you support this perspective.

There is widespread anticipation regarding the progression of a religious discrimination bill. The collaboration with faith leaders is crucial for ensuring that any legislation reflects the needs and concerns of diverse religious communities. Clarity on your position regarding faith-based organisations, including schools, and their ability to employ staff based on faith would also be appreciated.

As you continue to serve our community, please know that I am praying for your guidance and wisdom in making decisions that reflect the values and rights of all constituents. Your leadership is pivotal in these important discussions.
