  • showing that they are listening to the concerns of faith leaders

I am writing to express my concern about the new Respect at Work Bill currently under consideration. While I appreciate the intention behind the bill to create a safer and more respectful workplace environment, I am worried about its potential implications for faith communities. The bill’s broad definition of "harassment based on sex" seems to encompass traditional religious teachings and practices. This creates a conflict for many faith-based organisations and individuals who adhere to long-standing beliefs and doctrines.

It is particularly disappointing that the Premier has chosen to disregard the concerns and requests raised by faith leaders across Queensland. These leaders have highlighted the potential for the bill to infringe upon religious freedoms and the right to express and practise one's faith without fear of legal repercussions. Ignoring these concerns undermines the principle of religious freedom and could lead to significant unrest among faith communities who feel their rights are being overlooked.

Given these points, I urge you to address this issue urgently. Can you provide a response to clarify if the Government is willing to reconsider and amend the bill to protect the rights of faith communities while still achieving the bill’s objective of workplace respect and safety? It is essential to find a balanced approach that upholds both workplace safety and religious freedoms. Your attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated.
